A FREE runner who was given free rein of Number 10 Downing Street says the sport saved him from a life of crime.
The acrobatic antics of East Lancashire students Callum Harris, 17, and Jack Curtis, 20, were filmed as they somersaulted along the corridors of power.
A video of the performance, as part of a team of freerunners, has also been posted on YouTube as part of a campaign to open up more places for ‘freerunners’ to practice their routines.
Footage of their skill at the famous address impressed the Prime Minister so much he unveiled the video at the Tory party conference.
The pair were asked to take part after participating in the Urban Culture Jam festival, which took place in August and was organised by Accrington teenagers as part of the Blaze project.
Callum said discovering Blaze last year and making new friendships with young people such Jack, stopped his life from descending into chaos.
He is now planning to become a free-running instructor to help others.
He said: “The Blaze project in Accrington is just amazing, people don’t realise how special it is.
"I would probably have a criminal record by now, if not for them. I had already been arrested a few times because of things friends had done when I was with them.
“I was in company with people who were stealing, causing trouble and I was getting into trouble too.
“I just got to the point where I got fed up and wanted to change my circle of friends so I was so glad to meet people who were involved with Blaze, like Jack.”
Callum from Clayton-le-Moors, who is studying with Training 2000 in Blackburn, and Accrington and Rossendale College student Jack, from Accrington, were chosen to represent other Blaze youngsters in the project organised by the Somewhereto campaign.
Somewhereto is a project inspired by the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic games, which helps young people find the space to do the things they love within culture, sports and arts.
In his conference speech David Cameron said: “This is a fantastic initiative to help young people find the space they need to develop their passions.
"If 10 Downing Street can open its doors to something as adventurous as free running I hope it will inspire other people to see what their building could be used for.”
